Experiment: DCPIP and Vitamin C

A week after doing the 'energy value' experiment, the Form Four Helpilians again doing another experiment : Determine the vitamin C content in different type of fruit juices..
Of course it would be better if they could use all the fresh fruits to extract the juices....but it will be a bit messy doing that in the Lab...so I decided that they could have just used the fruit juices on shelves..
...It was not so much of the result of the experiment which concerned me...but.... the procedure of doing the experiment !!
Since this experiment has been asked once in SPM examination for Question 1, Paper 3, I have reminded the girls to take note of the way to write a proper 'planning & designing' of this experiment, which probably might be asked in paper 3 BUT instead for Question 2.

It starts with AIM : To determine the content/percentage of Vitamin C in a different fruit juices.

PROBLEM STATEMENT : What is the content of vitamin C in different fruit juices ?

HYPOTHESIS: Orange juice has a higher content of vitamin C than blackcurrent juice. //any reasonable sentence

VARIABLES:
Manipulated : Types of fruit juices
Responding : volumes of fruit juice used to decolourise (blue) DCPIP solution.//percentage of Vitamin C//vitamin C concentration
Constant : Volume of DCPIP (10ml)

APPARATUS & MATERIALS :
(Dont forget : Syringe with needle and 0.1%Ascorbic acid ! )

TECHNIQUE: measure and record the volume of fruit juices needed to decolorise DCPIP solution using scaled syringe.// calculating the content of vitamin C by using the Formula :.........

PROCEDURE;
**Draw apparatus
Dont forget the precaution !!

RESULT: A TAble !

CONCLUSION: Repeat hypothesis sentence .

Bio Open Book Test

It is difficult when your expectation is a bit too high...It was just about a week that we started the Chapter :Nutrition..and ...finally discussing about photosynthesis..It was a bit too fast for the girls to memorise the facts and what more to produce it back by answering questions.....I could have waited for another week to give out the test papers but when the papers were already printed, I didnt want to waste more time but to make them answer the questions this morning.......just before they went back for Pulang Bermalam (PB)
....Due to that, I have no choice except to make it an Open Book test....and they preferred it that way because they are pretty sure that they could get the answers correctly from their reference books !!
The whole class went quiet. Soundless..Its a pleasant scene...for once, everybody was so focused with the questions and they were in searched for the correct answers....









Experiment: Food energy value

Energy value of food sample can be determined by doing simple experiment in the Lab...Its a simple calorimeter bomb...And that was what we were doing last week.
The form 4 helpilia girls were conducting the experiment @ Bio Lab. they were investigating the two types of nuts : ground nut and cashew nuts. They want to compare which of the two nuts has higher energy value :

So the AIM of the investigation is : To determine the energy value of the food samples/ different nuts

Problem Statement: Does cashew nut has higher energy value than ground nut ?

Hypothesis : Different type of nuts has different energy value .
OR Cashew nut has a higher energy value than ground nut
OR you can even construct the sentence based on the experiment, such as :
CASHEW NUTS SHOWS A HIGHER INCREASE IN WATER TEMPERATURE THAN GROUND NUT..

Application of Osmosis

The effects and applications of osmosis in everyday life

1. Osmosis has a number of life-preserving functions:

it assists plants in receiving water,

it helps in the preservation of fruit and meat,

and is even used in kidney dialysis.

2. In addition, osmosis can be reversed to remove salt and other impurities from water.

3. The excessive use of chemical fertilizers will cause the plant cells to lose water. Plant cells plasmolysed and later on the whole plant wilt.

4. Dissolved ions from chemical fertilisers such as phosphates, nitrates, calcium, and magnesium, in the soil around the roots and root hairs, will cause the increase in solute concentration, but decrease in water molecules concentration, hence, water diffuse from the cell sap into soil water by osmosis.

5. When water is drawn out of the plant cell, the cytoplasm shrink away from the cellulose cell wall and cause plasmolysis.

6.Plasmolyzed cells lose turgidity and support, causing the whole plant to wilt.

7. Osmosis helps us in preserving food. So that it last longer. By using a concentrated salt or sugar solution, all the water molecules within the food cells are drawn out by osmosis.

8. The food without water will hinder the bacteria and fungus from growing.

9. Animals living in an aquatic environment which are not isotonic to their body tissue may face problem due to the process of osmosis.

10. For example, unicellular organism such Paramecium sp. Living in fresh water, Paramecium has a higher concentration of materials inside the cell than are present in the outside environment. Thus, water is constantly flowing into the cell through the process of osmosis. Paramecium has two contractile vacuoles that eliminate water entering the cell by through osmosis and help maintain osmotic equilibrium.(Figure 3.24)

11. Paramecium must constantly be expelling water to prevent the cell from becoming bloated with water and potentially bursting.

12.The plasma membrane, being semi permeable to certain substances will act as a gate keeper, regulating what goes in and out of the cell.

13. If there is any defect in the plasma membrane, many essential processes in the cells cannot be carried out. Thus the proper functioning of the plasma membrane is important to our health.

14. In order to maintain the proper function of the plasma membrane and the cell as a whole, it is important for us to take care of our food and water intake.

Reverse Osmosis

This process is best known for its use in desalination (removing the salt from sea water to get fresh water), but it has also been used to purify fresh water for medical, industrial and domestic applications since the early 1970s.

FAQ-Chapter3-Movement of substances

Lets see what are the important content which you should master for Paper 2 SPM :

1. The structure of the plasma membrane~ Label and function. Diagrams!!

3. The role of channel protein (pore protein)and Carrier protein.

* gaseous exchange in alveoli and blood cap by simple diffusion - Diagram and Explain (Facts + Explanation )
*Absorption of digested food in villi by both passive and active transport (depending on what type of food !) Diagram and Explain.
*Absorption of water in root hairs by OSMOSIS (Water !!!!)
*ION uptake by root hairs of plant through ACTIVE TRANSPORT.( Ion!!!)

What is Rhesus factor?

There are four general categories of blood: A, B, O, and AB.

Each blood type is further labeled as positive or negative, A+ or A- which is a reference to theRhesus factor of the blood.

People with the Rhesus factor, that is, people with the antigen present in their blood, are Rh-positive.

So a person who has a blood type of A and has the Rhesus factor is said to have A-positive, or A+, blood.

More than 85% of people are Rh-positive.

People without the Rhesus factor, that is, people that don't have the antigen in their blood, are Rh-negative.

A person's Rh type is generally significant only with respect to pregnancies.

Specifically, a Rh-positive child born to an Rh-negative woman runs the risk of developing Rh disease.

Only Rh-negative women risk having children with the Rhesus factor disease; Rh-positive women do not.So, for a Rh-negative woman to have a Rh-positive child, the father must have been Rh-positive. A Rh-positive man has a 50% chance of passing on his Rh-positive blood type to the child.

That is, the woman's body may naturally produce antibodies which attack the baby's blood, causing the baby's red blood cells to break down.

The result of this incompatibility will not affect the health of the mother but it can affect the child's health. Potential health problems include jaundice, anemia, brain or heart damage, and in severe cases Rh disease can be fatal.

The Rhesus factor is less likely to affect the first-born child because the woman's system will have had less time and is therefore less likely to produce the antibodies to fight off the antigens in the child's Rh-positive blood.

If the woman has become sensitized, that is, her immune system responded by producing antibodies, those antibodies will be present in her system for the rest of her life. Therefore, disparate Rhesus factor types between a woman and her child can increase the potential for Rh disease in each subsequent pregnancy.

Preventative measures to protect against the Rhesus factor disease and their devastating effects are available.

i. Women should be tested early in their first pregnancies to determine whether they are Rh-negative and whether they are sensitized. Sensitization may not only occur through normal pregnancies, but at any time a woman and her child's blood mix, including miscarriages, ectopic pregnancies, and blood transfusions.

ii. If a woman is Rh-negative, and has not yet been sensitized, she will likely be given an injection of a blood product known as Rh immunoglobulin (Rhlg) at about seven months into the pregnancy. This should prevent sensitization for the rest of the pregnancy. The Rhlg shot seeks to destroy any antigens present in the bloodstream before the mother is able to create antibodies.

iii.Additionally, it is generally recommended that the newborn be tested for his or her Rhesus blood type. If the child is positive, the mother is often given another Rhlg shot shortly after birth to prevent her from becoming sensitized. Rhlg injections only last for a given pregnancy. Subsequent pregnancies will likely require separate Rhlg injections.

iv. If the woman is Rh-negative and has been sensitized, the Rhlg injection will not help. Close monitoring of the baby should be conducted to ensure that Rh disease is not developing. Blood transfusions to replace the diseased blood with healthy blood may be given during or after delivery depending on the circumstances.

**The preventive measures will not be asked in examination. You just focus on the genetic chart which shows how this factor can be inherited to the offspring.

'Educational Blogging' Competition @UPSI


It was quite a story when I finally decided to register for the competition. When Hadi (ICT teacher) got a letter from the Principal asking him to find participants for this competition (UPSI sent letter to our school to ask for participation in conjunction with their ICT Day ) Hadi could only think of me and Swee Moi......knowing that I have this blog and Swee Moi has Chem.2u blog.

..And I said why not give it a try..(eventhough my heart is telling me that it is gonna be tough because it involves the whole nation )
...So starting from that point, my daughter and I worked it out together.
Most of the nights, both of us brainstormed and figured out what are the things a good blog should have.While I was focusing more on the content of the blog, my daughter was focusing more on the gadgets and the design...Actually both of us are computer savvy !

Finally, just a day before the closing date, we registered online and it was accepted.

..And when the time came, when I got a missed call from UPSI, I knew that this blog had won a prize ! ..(And it was the 4th prize among 214 participations all over Malaysia ). Adding to it Swee Mooi (Chemistry teacher)won a prize too..
Overjoyed by the news, we decided to attend the prize giving ceremony on the 5th August @UPSI.
And that day, four of us (me, Syahmi, Suhana, and Yuyu ) and Moi with her hubby went to Tanjung Malim (about an hour drive from KL)...and me....receiving a prize of a Canon digital camera plus a certificate ~ indeed was a JOY.

Thank You to the organiser and everyone @Pusat ICT UPSI - for motivating me to continue with my blogging activities -in education of course! At least I know that my blog is at par with others eventhough I have not really had a certified qualification in ICT !

Muscle cramps and Nutrition

Muscle cramps usually occur in the legs but sometimes in other parts of the body. They hurt a lot and are inconvenient when you're out socializing or even just sleeping. However, you may be able to treat your cramps through nutrition alone.


1. Drink plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration, which often leads to muscle cramps. Water is the most nutritional substance humans can take and its always available--and we'll never run out of it. If you exercise, you may also want to consume some fitness beverages to replace valuable electrolytes during or after your workout.

2. Stock up on minerals because when minerals become unbalanced in your body, you can experience muscle cramps. Focus on the big ones--calcium, magnesium, vitamin E, vitamin C and potassium. You can take supplements or plan your diet so you're getting all the minerals you need from food.

3. Take it easy on the salt intake. Diets high in salt and low in fruits and vegetables can cause muscle cramps.
