Ways of caring for the musculoskeletal system

Discuss ways of caring for the musculoskeletal system:

1. Following a balanced diet:

  • taking adequate amount of calcium and phosphorus.
  • eating food rich in calcium, for example milk and yoghurt.

2. Having a good posture:
  • posture is the position of the body and the way a person holds his body.
  • bad posture will puts undue pressure on the muscle and backbone
  • sit back on the chair with the hips well up against the back of the chair.
  • while standing, head, backbone, hips and legs should be aligned so that a person is balanced with his feet planted firmly on the ground.
  • bend the knees and keep the load close to the centre of the body while lifting objects

3. Using a proper attire for daily activities.
  • Discuss about the correct shoes
  • discuss about the correct clothing

4. Taking appropriate precautions during vigorous activities:

  • do stretching exercises before and after workout to avoid cramps and injuries.
  • warm up

5. Practising correct and safe exercise techniques:

  • its important to avoid injuries.

How fish moves-Question and Answer

LOCOMOTION IN A FISH ( 10 marks max)-
Ø The muscles consist of muscle blocks i.e., MYOTOMES arranged in segments on both sides of the vertebral column.
Ø The muscles act antagonistically.
Ø Contraction of myotomes on one side of the vertebral column and relaxation on the other side
Ø Causes the body to bend in a direction of the contraction
Ø Alternate contractions of the right and left myotome blocks causes body to bend side to side and the tail to bend accordingly.
Ø This produce a forward thrust which propels the fish forward
Ø Presence of fins i.e. dorsal and ventral fins, paired pectoral and pelvic fins.--- for stability

Ø The streamlined shapes –--to overcome water resistance and enable to move quickly in the water.

Ø The skin is covered with scales that have slimy coat---help reduce water resistance

Transpiration

It is very important to know the movement of water from soil upwards. You should be able to describe right from the beginning...and it starts with water molecules in the soil. Dont forget the keywords such as: hypotonic, root pressure, cohesion, adhesion, capillary action, transpirational pull...and arrange the explanation of the process in sequence...

How earthworm moves

Describe how earthworm moves : [ 5 marks]

v an invertebrate which has a hydrostatic skeleton.

v Body wall has longitudinal and circular muscles

v These muscles act antagonistically to cause movement

v Contractions of circular muscles cause the segments to extend while longitudinal muscles relax //

v Conversely the contractions of the longitudinal muscles cause segments to shorten.

v Locomotion takes place when the chaetae secure shortened segments in the posterior to the ground while //

v The anterior segments extend owing to contractions of the circular muscles.

v Fluid in the body cavity helps the earthworm to move.

**Note:

1.Any of the five points above for the maximum marks.

2.Written in bold are the Key sentences.
