Thalassemia

Yes...its stated in the syllabus~ a minor section in Chapter: Inheritance

Thalassemia............

I have reminded my students to know ALL the diseases stated in Bio Text Book by observing :
What? Who? Why? When? How?

..and they did not expect of all the diseases, this is the one asked in SPM 2011.

THALASSEMIA:
- a hereditary disease.

Explain the cause of this disease:

* caused by a autosomal recessive gene
* which leads to the synthesis of abnormal haemoglobin in red blood cells [ 2marks]

how it affects a person's health?

* they grow slowly, often develop jaundice.
*the red blood cells are smaller.
* without treatment, spleen,liver, and heart soon become enlarged.
* bones become thin and brittle.
* Heart failure and infection leading to death. [ Any 2 marks]

Variation Graph

Any question involving Variation, if data is given as Table below.., make sure you divide it into range..
and dont forget to prepare 'tally' to find its frequency.

Next, draw a HISTOGRAM for continuous variation..
and BAR CHART for discontinuous variation..
Draw Graph:
1. Uniform scales for both axis
2. Label the axis...dont forget the UNIT (....)
3. Transfer all the points CORRECTLY

Bio Intensive Revision

Trying to be cool...but its becoming hot...especially when SPM is knocking at your door :))Doing intensive revision with 4 classes gathered in the same venue...it must be challenging !!
We don't have an auditorium at our school...teachers are fighting for a place...
To conduct a massive lecture, I surely need a spacious place....

The revision is by chapters..
So far the girls response well....Ask them :)



I have completed doing ALL CHAPTERS last two weeks...The rest is left for polishing the chapters :)

Last minute preparation for Bio

PAPER 1

Browse through all SPM paper 1 .. from 2005-2010 ~ Familiarise with all the diagrams in the questions. Try out if you havent..And check the correct answers for each of the questions..

PAPER 2


1. Browse through all the sample questions and answers ~~by CHAPTERS.
2. For each chapters, pick at least 5 different types of questions- Observe the matching answers provided. Start memorising the keyword for each answer.(STRUCTURE)
3. Pay extra attention to the FAQ (Frequently ask question ) or the popular chapters based on analysis by your teacher, reference books...or even my analysis (which you can find in my previous postings).

4. For ESSAY :

1. Browse by chapters, then Focus on the chapters which are popular asked for essays..(Based on analysis), study the sample essays which have sample answers...Study the marking scheme which provided the 'key words', Facts + Explanation.

Answer:

· DNA fingerprinting is a technique used to identify parents of a child based on DNA banding similarity

· Generally, the DNA profile of a child is the combination of the mother and father.

· A child inherit half of the chromosomes number from father and half from mother.

· DNA fingerprinting gives more details and information regarding the identity of a person while thumbprints give general information as it is based on a few different types.

· A blood sample, seminal fluid or any tissue can be analysed and its result is compared with thatof an individual who is a suspect.

* In conclusion, man P is the father of the child as the similarity of his DNA is higher

· Genetic engineering is a technique of manipulating the genes in an organism by removing a gene from one organism and transferring it to another organism

· Production of insulin from bacteria.

· Gene from the pancreas that can produce insulin is removed and inserted into the DNA molecule of bacteria.

· Produce food or plants which are genetically modified to produce high quality yield.
