Gempur Paper 3- Set 1

Lets start doing revision for Paper 3
Here is the first sample extracted from SBP collection~ Peperiksaan Akhir Tahun Tkt 4 2006.
~Why not you try it and I will post the marking scheme shortly..

Question 1
A group of students carried out an experiment to study the effect of light intensity on the rate of photosynthesis
Diagram 1(a)(i) shows the set up of the experiment.
Diagram 1(a)(ii) shows the time taken for the experiment
Diagram 1(b) shows the result of the experiment done at the distance of 20 cm,40 cm,60 cm and 80 cm from the bulb (menthol)

a)(i) Based on diagram 1(b),state two observations that can be made from the experiment.

(ii)State the inference for each observation made in (a) (i).

(b) (i) Record the time taken for the experiment in the space provided in diagram
1(a)(ii).
(ii) Record the number of gas bubbles released in the space provided in diagram1(b) at the distance of 20 cm,40 cm,60 cm and 80 cm in the time given.

(c)(i) Complete Table 1 based on the experiment that was carried out..


(d)(i)State the hypothesis for this experiment. [3 marks]

(ii) Record the result of the experiment in the table below. Plot a graph of rate of photosynthesis against distance [3 marks](e)The experiment is repeated, but by increasing the temperature of the water bath
to 600C . Predict the effect of increasing the water temperature to the rate of
photosynthesis. [ 3 marks]

(f)State the relationship between the increase of temperature and the rate of photosynthesis.

(g)Based on the experiment, define photosynthesis operationally. [3 marks]

(h) Another group of students had carried out the experiment to study the effect of
carbon dioxide concentration on the rate of photosynthesis but using the
following apparatus and materials.

Hydrilla sp, sodium hydrogen carbonate powder, distilled water, light bulb.

Categorised the apparatus and materials in their experiment. [3 marks]



QUESTION 2

Microorganisms are not always active. The growth and activities of microorganisms are influenced by various abiotic factors such as temperature, pH, light intensity and the presence or absence of nutrients.

Based on the above information, design a laboratory experiment to investigate the effect of pH, on the activity of yeast.

Your experimental planning need to include the following aspects:

· Statement of hypothesis
· List of materials and apparatus
· Technique used
· Experimental procedures
· Presentation of data
· Conclusion
