1. The human immunodeficiency (HIV) causes AIDS (acquired immune deficiency syndrome).
2. The human immunodeficiency virus attacks a type of lymphocyte called the helper T-cells and destroys them. New viruses are reproduced in the body. These weaken the body immune system. Therefore, a person becomes susceptible to various diseases that he is usually resistant to. Until now there is no vaccine yet for AIDS .
3. Explain how HIV can be spread.
a) Transfer of body fluids (ex. blood or semen )
b) Across the placenta.
c) Breast feeding.
d) Unprotected sex with an infected person.
e) Contaminated needles used to inject drugs or for tattoos.
4.HIV can be prevented through :
a) Blood products used should be treated to destroy the virus.
b) Educational programmes about the risk of unprotected sex/sharing of needles.
c) Use condoms to reduce the risk of infection.
d) Partners in a new relationship should check their HIV status by having a blood test.
e) Certain drugs may retard the progress of the disease
